The Polish Foreign Ministry spoke out against Ukraine’s unfair competition in grain

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau wrote in an article for the Politico newspaper that Eastern Poland makes money from agriculture, and the same region welcomes Ukrainian refugees, but grain from Ukraine harms local farmers. He called on Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to show solidarity.
In his material, Rau noted that the Poles provide assistance to Ukraine that is equivalent to 3% of the country’s GDP, which is four times more than Germany and ten times more than the United States. At the same time, the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry indicated that the eastern regions of the country, where arriving Ukrainian refugees remain, incur the greatest expenses. According to the official, in the first quarter of 2023, 600 times more wheat from Ukraine entered the Polish market than a year earlier.
The minister rejected Zelensky’s accusations of a lack of solidarity, assuring that the Poles show it more than anyone else in the world, but it must act in both directions. Rau added that Poland, having proven its role as a “reliable and trustworthy savior,” must also protect its own home. The Foreign Minister concluded that Warsaw will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO and the European Union (EU), but at the same time it will oppose any unfair competition.
