US intelligence agencies are putting psychological pressure on Russian diplomats and trying to recruit them. This was stated by Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Maria Zabolotskaya during her speech at a meeting of the committee on relations with the host country.
“The updated information we provided indicates that the United States continues to purposefully apply a whole range of measures and restrictions to our permanent mission and its staff, aimed at reducing the effectiveness of our interaction with the UN, moreover, at exerting psychological pressure on Russian diplomats,” she said. Zabolotskaya pointed to the “intrusive recruiting approaches” of the security services, which approach diplomats on the street and at the airport. Also, diplomatic mission employees are faced with contextual advertising on social networks and search engines, including Yahoo and YouTube, in which they are encouraged to cooperate with the FBI. According to her, agitation leaflets are regularly put up at the permanent mission and its residential complex, as well as on the way of diplomats to and from their place of work.
In May, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov drew attention to provocations by the US intelligence agencies. According to him, since last year on the territory of the embassy, when watching YouTube, targeted FBI advertising has regularly appeared, in which diplomats are invited to call the number and share information.
On May 16, the CIA announced the creation of a Telegram channel for recruiting Russians. On the platform, the special service posted videos and publications in Russian, in which they called on Russians working in the fields of intelligence, diplomacy, science and technology, or who are familiar with such people, to get in touch through the Tor service.
Commenting on the appearance of the Telegram channel, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova named his “handy resource for tracking callers”. Antonov called the project “empty” and expressed confidence that the Russians would not allow attempts to split their unity.
