The new package of EU sanctions against Russia is illegitimate, it also contradicts the system of international financial and trade relations, the Permanent Mission of Russia to the European Union said. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
On December 16, the ninth package of EU sanctions against Russia came into force.
As stated in the Permanent Mission, such sanctions have long become the “favorite foreign policy tool” of the European Union. According to diplomats, in this way Brussels is trying to influence sovereign states by illegitimate methods.
“The introduction of restrictive measures is contrary to the system of international financial and trade relations, runs counter to the fundamental principles of the WTO,” the statement says.
The permanent mission also recalled the comments of European officials about the illegality of extraterritorial sanctions. It is also noted that in Europe they actually “invented a mechanism for punishing” citizens of the EU and third countries for violating illegitimate sanctions.
“Isn’t the EU taking on too much by claiming to be an international policeman and judge?” the commentary says. The permanent mission also noted that more and more countries agree with the Russian position and do not want to accept EU rules.
