The US Department of Defense believes that the March incident with the fall of the MQ-9 multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) into the Black Sea was an accident. This statement was made on Friday, August 18, by the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, General James Hecker.
The military said that he was 99% sure that the incident was accidental and that there were no hostile intentions on the part of the Russian military – “their pilot just made a mistake.”
Hecker confirmed that after the incident, Russia acted safely and professionally in the airspace, which is under the responsibility of the commander of the US Air Force.
On March 14, an American MQ-9 Reaper strike and reconnaissance UAV crashed into the sea near Crimea after Russian fighter pilots tracking it made it “rain kerosene”. Sources said that the Russian side managed to get secret data from a crashed drone.
After this incident, the Americans completely refused to fly strategic drones Global Hawk over the Black Sea, data from the Flightradar24 portal testified. According to sources, the US command considered further continuation of flights in the area inappropriate.
