The only candidate for the post of head of the Supreme Court was Irina Podnosova

The High Qualifications Commission of Judges (HQCJ) has completed accepting documents from applicants for the post of Chairman of the Supreme Court. Applications were accepted until March 22. The only candidate for the position became judge Irina Podnosova. She currently holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court. The application will be reviewed on April 1.

On February 23, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, Vyacheslav Lebedev, who held the position since 1991, died. The duties of the Chairman of the Supreme Court are temporarily assigned to First Deputy Petr Serkov. After the death of Mr. Lebedev, the qualification board announced a competition for the vacant seat. Since 2001, the Chairman of the RF Supreme Court has been elected on a competitive basis.

Irina Podnosova was born in Pskov. She received her education at the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University at the same time as President Vladimir Putin. Since 1990, Ms. Podnosova has successively held the positions of judge of the Luga City Court of the Leningrad Region. Later she became the chairman of this court, and then the deputy chairman of the Leningrad Regional Court and its head. In July 2020, she took up the position of Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
