The head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team, Irina Viner, spoke out against the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympics “without an anthem and a flag.” In her opinion, the Olympic Games in their modern form have “outlived their usefulness”, one of the reasons for this is the participation of transgender athletes in competitions. She believes that Russia needs to participate in alternative international competitions and organize them itself.
“You need to fight and win for your homeland, for your mother, for coaches, for the city in which you were born. It’s a crazy responsibility. I feel it myself and inspire my children. Now they want us to perform without an anthem, a flag, I really object to these competitions, and even with transgender people. I believe that the Olympic Games have outlived their usefulness, ”said Ms. Wiener during the presentation of her autobiography (quoted from “Match TV”).
The head coach of Russian rhythmic gymnasts specified that one of the alternatives to the Olympics would be the World Friendship Games, which will be held in Moscow in 2024. According to Irina Viner, representatives of 137 states have already declared their readiness to take part in them. Also, Ms. Viner called for the active organization of other international competitions, including “on the SCO and BRICS sites.”
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, while the Paralympic Games are scheduled from August 28 to September 8. In March, the IOC recommended with reservations that Russian and Belarusian athletes be allowed to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. In July, IOC chief Thomas Bach confirmed that Russia would not be invited to the Summer Games.
On August 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with members of the government, touched upon the topic of politicization of international sports structures. According to him opinionthe Olympic movement is degrading and this will lead to the creation of parallel structures in sports.
