The number of trips abroad by Russians in nine months increased by 20% – Kommersant

Between January and September 2023, Russians made 21 million trips abroad, calculated RBC based on statistics from the FSB border service. The number of trips abroad this year is 20% higher than in January-September 2022, when Russian citizens made 17.4 million trips.
According to FSB statistics, Abkhazia and Turkey were among the most popular destinations among Russians at the end of nine months. The flow of Russians to Abkhazia in January-September increased by 4%, to 4.61 million trips. The number of trips by Russians to Turkey over the same period increased by 29%, to 4.59 million trips. The flow from Russia to the UAE increased by 64% in annual terms (1.2 million trips), as well as to Egypt – by 50% (919 thousand trips). The top 10 countries most visited by Russian citizens also included Thailand and China, which were not included in the list last year.
Among the EU member countries, only Finland entered the top ten popular travel destinations, which Russians visited 507.9 thousand times in nine months. Compared to January-September last year, the number of trips decreased by 30%. At the end of nine months of 2022, Finland was in fifth place among the most visited countries by Russians (731.2 thousand trips).
Statistics from the FSB Border Service take into account crossings of foreign and Russian citizens of the state border by purpose of visit: business, work, tourism, private, educational, moving to a permanent place of residence, as well as trips of personnel and military personnel servicing vehicles.
From January to September 2023, three times more foreign tourists visited Russia compared to the same period in 2022. According to the FBS border service, this is about 430 thousand people. Every fourth of them came from China.
