The number of conscripts who join the army immediately after school today does not exceed 3.5% in the Western Military District. Kommersant learned about this during TASS briefingdedicated to the peculiarities of conscription for military service in the Western Military District.
“The number of 18-year-old citizens who join the Russian armed forces after school has been declining since 2018. If we compare the indicators, today the number of such conscripts does not exceed 3.5%,” said Colonel Igor Golovach, head of the department of conscription and training of citizens for military service of the organizational and mobilization department of the headquarters of the Western Military District.
According to him, in recent years there have been significant changes in the age and education of conscripts: more and more citizens with higher and secondary vocational education are entering the ranks. “This became possible thanks to changes in legislation, according to which conscripts who received their first deferment while still in school can use it to obtain higher and secondary vocational education,” the speaker noted.
As part of the autumn campaign, about 40 thousand people will be sent to serve in the army in the district. The head of the department explained that to date, more than 36 thousand conscripts have passed through the commissariats, of which 12 thousand are already preparing to enter service, and the rest have received the required deferments or exemptions for various reasons. The start of shipments from collection points of the Western Military District starts on October 17. The service life, as before, will be 12 months. Conscripts will not be sent to the zone of a special military operation, Igor Golovach emphasized.
