Over 1.5 million Russians have become infected with HIV over the past 40 years since the emergence of this disease in the country. This statement was made by the head of the specialized research department of epidemiology and AIDS prevention of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Vadim Pokrovsky.
“According to our data, it has been spreading somewhere for at least 40 years. The first patients came to Russia somewhere in 1981-1982. During this time, 1.5 million Russians became infected with HIV,” Pokrovsky said.
He also clarified that today this figure is already higher. At the same time, more than 450 thousand Russian residents died from HIV.
According to the expert, based on the report of Rospotrebnadzor, the economic damage from the spread of this infection in the country last year exceeded 250 billion rubles.
