Since the beginning of the year, 800 natural fires have been registered in the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD). This is almost twice as high as last year, when the number of natural fires was 450, reports the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation for the Far Eastern Federal District. The most affected forest areas were in the Primorsky, Khabarovsk, Transbaikal Territories, and the Jewish Autonomous Region (JAO).

“The majority of fires in the district (87%) were the result of citizens’ failure to comply with fire safety rules in forests due to improper implementation of legislation on the organization and conduct of preventive controlled fire burning in forests,”— believes supervisory agency. It is noted that there remains a problem with staffing forest fire organizations. In particular, the staffing level of the Primorsk Air Base is 20% less than the established standard.

According to the prosecutor’s office, in 2023 the area of forest fires exceeded the target indicators set by the Russian government: more than 4.5 times in the Khabarovsk Territory and the Magadan Region, 2.8 times in the Jewish Autonomous Region, 1.6 times in the Amur Region . During the first 24 hours, fires did not have time to extinguish according to planned indicators, most often in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Kamchatka, Khabarovsk Territories, Amur, Magadan Regions and the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

Deputy Prosecutor General Dmitry Demeshin instructed his subordinates to use prosecutorial response measures to ensure the sufficiency of financial and material resources to prevent and combat forest fires, the proper technical condition and maintenance of specialized forest fire equipment, the full staffing of fire-fighting units, and increase the security of populated areas.

Who should be responsible for forest fires – in the Kommersant material “Chief of Extinguishing”.
