The heat wave that this summer is affecting the inhabitants of many regions of the planet is part of the overall picture of global warming, told in an interview with RT, deputy director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics. A.M. Obukhov RAS, head of the laboratory of climatology of the Institute of Geography RAS Vladimir Semyonov.
According to him, climate change is happening monotonously and steadily. In Russia, for example, in the last 50 years, each subsequent decade has been warmer than the previous one. At the same time, the heat adds atmospheric phenomena, which further worsen the situation.
According to Semenov’s forecast, waves of abnormal heat in the foreseeable future will occur more often, as well as new temperature records.
“Now we see that the temperature is growing steadily in almost all regions of the planet,” Semyonov said.
He noted that “in a changing climate, we will constantly record new weather and temperature records.”
“The number of heat waves will increase,” the expert said. He explained that “this is a direct consequence of global warming, which also changes atmospheric circulation,” which “adds extreme weather conditions in a number of regions.”
So, in the western part of Russia, there are more blocking anticyclones than before. “The current heat on Russian territory is the result of such a stable anticyclone,” Semyonov explained.
He also said that according to theoretical studies, with an increase in atmospheric temperature, such anticyclones in the European territory of the Russian Federation will appear in summer more and more.
