Commissioner of the National Hockey League (NHL) Gary Bettman said that in the upcoming season, hockey players will not go on the ice in the form of LGBT symbols.
According to Mr. Bettman, the refusal of some teams or individual players to wear LGBT uniforms has had a negative impact on the priority of events that draw attention to the problems of various social groups. Therefore, it was decided to abandon this form in the upcoming season.
“I suggested that it would be appropriate for clubs not to change their uniforms during warm-ups, because it detracts from the fact that all of our teams in one form or another hold evenings in honor of various social groups. We would prefer that they continue to receive due attention, rather than a distraction, ”said the commissioner (quoted from sportsnet).
In March 2023, the NHL club Chicago Blackhawks decided not to put LGBT symbols on their uniforms. As the club explained, there is a ban on LGBT propaganda in Russia, and the management does not want to create problems for their Russian hockey players. The New York Rangers and Minnesota also made a similar decision.
