The National Hockey League expressed disapproval over the removal of the Israeli team from hockey tournaments.
Let us remind you that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has temporarily suspended the Israeli team from participating in competitions under the auspices of the organization. It is explained that such measures were taken for security reasons in connection with the conflict in the Gaza Strip, since the IIHF is obliged to protect all participants in the competition. Let us note that the IIHF previously explained the suspension of the Russian national team with the same wording.
The NHL press service stated that the organization “has serious concerns.” At the same time, she expressed the hope that the suspension is temporary and is related to the desire to ensure the safety of all participants in the competition. The NHL said that, to the best of its knowledge, the suspension is not a sanction and will not affect the Israeli Federation’s status as a full member of the IIHF.
The NHL called on the IIHF to quickly resolve all issues so that “the Israeli national teams are not unfairly excluded from future competitions for which they are eligible and have qualified,” the NHL said in a statement.
The Israeli national team was supposed to take part in Group A of the second division of the World Cup, which will be held in Belgrade from April 21 to 27, 2024.
