The new head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry promised to maintain sanctions against Russia

Japan will maintain the sanctions against Russia that were introduced earlier. This was announced by Yoko Kamikawa, who took over the post of Japanese Foreign Minister during a government reshuffle.

“Our country, as chairman of the G7, will continue diplomatic efforts [в связи с конфликтом на Украине]such as imposing tough sanctions against Russia,” she said (quote according to TASS).

At the same time, Kamikawa recalled, Russia and Japan are neighbors, so interaction between the countries is necessary in matters of economic activity, including fishing, maritime security, etc. The minister emphasized that Tokyo will act in accordance with its national interests.

Against the backdrop of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Japan has already introduced several packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation, joining the restrictions of the West. Last time Tokyo expanded anti-Russian sanctions in early August. The list of goods prohibited for import into Russia has increased by 758 items. In particular, cars with an engine capacity of more than 1.9 liters and tires for large vehicles were banned.

February 10, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova called closed the issue of a peace treaty with Japan, emphasizing the impossibility of negotiations due to Tokyo’s “openly unfriendly” position. During today’s press conference, Kamikawa said that Japan will continue its course towards concluding a peace treaty with Russia and resolving the territorial dispute around the southern part of the Kuril Islands.
