The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, said in an interview Politicothat Armenia can no longer rely on Moscow as a guarantor of its security.
He stressed that Armenia’s strategy should be to reduce dependence on other countries. Pashinyan expressed the desire to have an independent and sovereign country, but at the same time avoid getting into conflicts between West and East, North and South. He emphasized that Armenia should not become a “proxy” and be drawn into other people’s interests.
The Prime Minister noted that the security situation has changed dramatically after tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh and the closure of the Lachin corridor. He called the activities of Russian peacekeepers in the region “a failure,” but admitted that he could not say that without their presence the situation would have been better.
Pashinyan noted that the European Union and the United States support Armenia in its program of democratic reforms. However, he said the aid the country is receiving is not enough to achieve its goals and agenda.
