University of Toronto student Peter Ma has used a neural network to identify radio signals from space that could be “messages” from extraterrestrial civilizations.

The neural network was trained on the observation data of 820 stars collected in 2016, collected by the SETI Institute for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. This allowed the algorithm to find eight signals of interest.

The signals are narrow-band, which is uncharacteristic of “natural phenomena,” according to an article in the journal Nature Astronomy.
