The natural decline in the population in Russia in the first half of 2023 amounted to 272.5 thousand people against 383.8 thousand people for the same period in 2022. The indicator decreased by 29%, follows from the data of Rosstat.
In January-June, 616.2 thousand children were born in Russia, which is 3% less than the same period in 2022, when 635.2 thousand children were born. The number of deaths was 888.7 thousand people against 1.019 million – the figure decreased by 12.8%.
At the end of 2022, the natural decline in the population fell by 42.5% compared to 2021 – 599 thousand people against 1.042 million. By the beginning of 2023, the population of Russia decreased to 146.4 million people from 147 million at the beginning of 2022.
