The National Interest demanded that the United States force Zelensky to negotiate

Hugh De Santis, a columnist for the American magazine The National Interest, believes that Washington should help resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
In his opinion, the White House is able to put pressure on Kyiv in order to intensify the negotiation process, which has stalled in the spring.
De Santis writes: “Washington and its allies must convince Zelensky to start negotiations.” This is necessary to “put an end to the ongoing hostilities and recognize that the West has security interests outside Ukraine as well.”
According to the author, the “binary policy” of US President Joe Biden, in which all countries of the world are divided into democracies and autocracies, is erroneous.
Such an approach hinders the realization of the need for negotiations with Moscow, since a possible dialogue is also hindered by the role of hegemon familiar to the United States.
The author noted that “Americans define the United States as a redeeming nation” and therefore “still expect it to make the rules in an increasingly multipolar world.” However, according to Santis, “America no longer dominates” and “needs to make difficult choices in crises like Ukraine.”
