Daily Star: In Japan, the mystery of the pregnancy of a monkey living in a solitary enclosure has been revealed
Employees of the zoological garden in the Japanese prefecture of Nagasaki found out how a lonely monkey, who lived in a cage without males, was able to become pregnant. The Daily Star writes about this.
The publication reports that a 12-year-old female white-handed gibbon named Momo became pregnant in 2021, surprising her keepers. She had no contact with males.
Theoretically, it would be quite easy to find out the reasons for a primate’s pregnancy and identify the father using a DNA test. But Momo did not let anyone near her son for two years. Recently, the caretakers managed to obtain biological materials.
It turned out that the father of the “wonderful child” is a 34-year-old gibbon who lives in a neighboring enclosure. Zoo staff believe the monkeys were able to communicate through a small hole between the cells.
