The Ministry of Transport has adjusted the schedule for the introduction of biometrics in transport

The Ministry of Transport plans to install systems for identifying passengers using biometrics at four transport infrastructure facilities in 2024. About this it says in the new version of the strategy for digital transformation of the transport industry until 2030, approved by the government.

The biometrics project is included in the “Green Digital Passenger Corridor” – the so-called common pool of projects to simplify fare payment and passenger admission. According to the document, in 2025 biometrics will be used at 15 infrastructure facilities, and in 2026 – 70. It is expected that by 2030 there will be 700 such facilities.

In the previous version of the digital transformation strategy, adopted in February 2021, it was planned to launch biometrics access at 6% of Russian airports by the end of 2023, that is, at least 12 facilities.

The Ministry of Transport explained the adjustment of indicators for digital transformation, including biometrics, by “new challenges facing the transport complex today,” writes RBC. They recalled that one of the key areas now is import substitution of technologies. Also, the shift in deadlines was due to measures to use a unified biometric system (SBS) for the implementation of the project, the department clarified.

The ministry noted that they plan to introduce biometrics not only at airports. However, other potential objects were not named there. The Ministry of Digital Development told RBC that the project will first be implemented in the metro. In the future, biometrics will be introduced on other types of transport.
