The Ministry of Sports will begin to study the issue of restoring the Donbass Arena in Donetsk in 2024. Deputy Minister of Sports of Russia Odes Baysultanov reported this to TASS.
“Due to the fact that there are certain conditions, it would be wrong to start construction of one of the largest football infrastructure projects (Donbass Arena) today. Most likely, we will be working on this topic from 2024,” the deputy minister said on the sidelines of the “Russia is a Sports Power” forum in Perm.
The deputy minister also assured that Shakhtar Donetsk “will take its rightful place among the worthy teams of Russia.”
The Donbass Arena stadium, built in 2009 with the support of Donetsk businessman Rinat Akhmetov, is designed for 52 thousand spectators. Received significant damage in 2014 during the armed conflict.
The Shakhtar football club, which has the status of one of the giants of Eastern European football, was based in Donetsk until 2014. In May 2014, the team moved to Kharkov, and after February 2022 – to Lviv. The DPR created its own club, Shakhtar.
Yesterday, October 19, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko reported on the creation of the “Commonwealth” football league, which united ten clubs from the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. The championship is scheduled for March 2024.
