The Russian Ministry of Justice reported that verification and recognition of the Yeltsin Center as a foreign agent is impossible, according to federal law No. 68 “On the historical heritage centers of Russian presidents who have ceased to exercise their powers.” In accordance with this law, the organization was opened in Yekaterinburg in 2015. “According to the legislation, the management of the center is not required to submit accounts, explain for their expenses, including foreign receipts, use of property, and the like. Therefore, he feels his impunity. In this situation, I see the only way out – to edit the Federal Law and deprive the Yeltsin Center of these benefits. I will discuss the initiative with my colleagues,” Deputy Alshevsky commented on the response of the Ministry of Justice.
June 15 on the inspection of the Yeltsin Center by the Ministry of Justice told Deputy Minister of Justice Oleg Sviridenko at a meeting of the State Duma commission to investigate the facts of interference by foreign states in Russia’s internal affairs. The Yeltsin Center then reported that there were no grounds for including foreign agents on the list.
Earlier, the Yeltsin Center was repeatedly criticized for its activities, including calls to close it. In 2022, the prosecutor’s office checked his work, but the supervisory agency did not find grounds for a response. Then one of the reasons was the public condemnation by the Yeltsin Center of a special military operation in Ukraine.
