The head of the migration department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Valentina Kazakova, said that the department currently does not have the technical capabilities to issue electronic passports. Initially, the ministry planned to begin their production in January 2023.
“It is spelled out (in the law – Kommersant) – the possibility of issuing such a passport with an electronic medium, but if it is technically possible, there is no talk of this yet. But the legislator included the possibility in the law so that we strive for informatization,” said Valentina Kazakova on the Rossiya-24 TV channel (quoted from TASS).
According to her, an electronic passport looks like a plastic card, inside of which there is a chip with a person’s personal data. The project was prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Digital Development. Russian President Vladimir Putin September 18, 2023 signed decree on digital passport.
The pilot regions for issuing electronic passports in January 2023 were to be Moscow, the Moscow region and Tatarstan. In June 2022, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development temporarily postponed the issue of issuing such documents.
