The Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov said that the department in the new higher education system plans to divide master’s programs into professional ones for obtaining in-depth knowledge and research ones for moving into science. The head of the Ministry of Education and Science said this during a meeting with students.

The minister noted that the main goal of a master’s program instead of a diploma should be to obtain additional knowledge. “Master’s programs should only be offered in those universities where there are personnel and infrastructure capabilities for this. This is especially important for natural science and engineering specialties and areas,” explained Mr. Falkov (quoted from “Interfax”).

In May 2023, the Ministry of Education and Science announced the abandonment of the Bologna system and the creation of its own “unique” model of higher education. Officials proposed abandoning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in favor of two new levels of education – basic (from four to six years) and specialized higher education (from one to three years). In the 2023/24 and 2025/26 academic years, a pilot project to introduce the new system will be implemented in six universities. The project will involve MAI, MISIS, Moscow State Pedagogical University, Baltic Federal University, St. Petersburg Mining University and Tomsk State University.

Why the Ministry of Education and Science is thinking about increasing the prestige of targeted training – in the material “Pass passes to work”.
