The head of the Ministry of Education and Science Valery Falkov said that in the field of IT they will teach at universities for four years – for programming, they say, a bachelor’s degree is enough. While engineers and scientists should be trained in the course of a specialist for 5-6 years. The message caused a flurry of discussions in the IT community, and opinions differed significantly.
However, the head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education did not at all refuse to improve the level of education for IT specialists, emphasizing that everyone who wants to can add “master’s, postgraduate, residency, assistant internships” to the basic bachelor’s degree. But in general, the minister spoke about technical disciplines as follows: “According to representatives of the IT sector, four years of study are enough to acquire a profession in IT.” And he compared them to “a number of engineering and natural science industries” that require more time to study, from five to six years. The minister mentioned employers – they say that when hiring people should clearly understand “what industry qualifications a graduate has.”
In total, as statistics show, every year the country needs 120,000 new IT specialists. Perhaps now more – taking into account relocants.
– That’s right about 4 years, – says Ivan Berezin, a graduate of MISIS. – Because, firstly, now programming languages and some basics of coding are already taught at school. Secondly, unnecessarily fundamental knowledge has been taught so far. By and large, a programmer does not need higher mathematics, only its basics are needed. For all the more than 30 years of my work, such things as “Physical foundations of computers”, “iron”, in other words, were absolutely not useful to me. Or the economy, also in full… You don’t need it, you’re just wasting your time. In general, I think that teaching programming should be more flexible, more maneuverable, there should be some kind of individual programs. Because there are a lot of types and directions of programming, some developers have 12-15 names. An IT specialist is different for an IT specialist, and already at the university a person understands what the soul lies in and where to move further.
In discussing the message about the 4-year bachelor’s degree, the IT community once again vividly outlined its individuality. And consistency too: they even held a vote on a popular resource for programmers. Approximately 20% voted for training in IT from 2 to 4 years, 17% for training from 4 to 6 years, 52% of those who voted said “I am still studying”.
There is also a range of opinions. There is a position, and it is quite stable, that it is impossible to teach programming – you have to be born with this, like with an ear for music or literary talents. Therefore, it is important to get the basics, and then study yourself all your life. “IT involves the constant emergence of new products and technologies, being in IT means constantly learning new things,” Georgy, an employee of one of the large companies, voiced this opinion. “If an IT specialist wants to remain competitive in the market, then he is still doomed to update knowledge about new technologies and frameworks (a framework is a software platform. – Auth.) for the rest of his life.” What kind of bachelor’s and master’s programs are there …
Other programmers believe that you still need to study, and 4 years is the most. “In England, as a rule, they study 3 + 1: 3 years of undergraduate and 1 year of master’s degree, in the USA you can also meet this way,” Ilya believes. – In fairness, there are not so many fundamental things that do not become obsolete over time in IT. Plus mathematics and logic, on which it all stands.
Caused a discussion and the continuation of the education of a programmer. One adherent of magistracy and graduate school argues that “if we raise the level, expanding the concept of IT to its real state, then there may not be enough magistracy.” Another believes: “If you study dead languages, hardware platforms, and so on, you can spend your whole life. But knowledge gives an advantage in related and near-profile areas.
“Programming is a separate planet,” one of the participants formulates the principle, and it’s hard to disagree with this. Every now and then some “juniors”, “middles”, “leads” and “seniors” flicker in the public pages of IT specialists. As MK was told, these are intra-corporate designations of training levels. “Junior” has the simplest set of knowledge and competencies, “Senior” (“senior-tomato”) the most advanced, the highest caste. Moreover, both in terms of the amount of knowledge and talent: there are both “seniors” at 23 and “juniors” at 53.
According to the Hamburg account, a bachelor after graduation must already be a “senior” in order to get a job, the insiders believe. “You must have a certificate of completion of DS courses (sklearn, lgbm, catboost, keras or pytorch), otherwise the graduate will not pass the HR filter.” Translated into Russian, you need to know “dofiga” in order to go through the personnel department and get that high salary that the IT field is famous for.
And as for the “leads”, or “team leads”, these are the leaders of the development team, who just need more comprehensive competencies than everyone else. As one of the representatives of this community poetically put it, programming is not working with a computer, as many people think. This is work with people, followed by giving commands to the computer.
