The global trend towards a transition to a low-carbon economy continues, Director of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects Natalya Stapran told Vedomosti. This is an inevitable future and it is necessary to adequately integrate into climate processes at the stage of formation of the rules of the game, she is sure. Although the sanctions policy is forcing the EU countries to adjust plans to decarbonize the economy, they ask not to link the situational return to coal with their climate goals and still insist that ambitions to phase out hydrocarbons must grow, the official continued.
“Closing the European market from Russia does not mean at all that the Russian economy will stop moving towards decarbonization. On the contrary, now it is extremely important to expand the directions of this movement and intensify cooperation with the Eastern partners, who are full-fledged participants in the international climate dialogue,” Stapran believes.
