A car with Russian peacekeepers near the village of Dzhatanyag in Nagorno-Karabakh was fired upon from small arms, the servicemen in it were killed, reported Russian Ministry of Defense.
“On September 20, while returning from an observation post of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the area of the village of Dzhanyatag, a car with Russian military personnel came under small arms fire. As a result of the shelling, the Russian servicemen in the car were killed,” the statement said.
Russian and Azerbaijani investigators are working at the scene, the Ministry of Defense added.
On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorism measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh to “restorate the constitutional order.” Already on September 20, the unrecognized NKR announced a complete ceasefire and disarmament of troops through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers. This was confirmed by the defense departments of Azerbaijan and Russia.
Russian peacekeepers, talked previously in the Ministry of Defense, continue to perform their functions in conditions of escalation. In particular, their forces evacuated more than 2,000 civilians. The command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent is in contact with the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides, as well as representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh, the military department added.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the intensity of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh has decreased since the ceasefire. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Russian peacekeepers are doing everything to protect the civilian population of Karabakh, and Moscow is in close contact with the authorities in Yerevan, Stepanakert and Baku.
