Canada sent the first Leopard 2 tank to Ukraine, the country will continue to support Kyiv and supply the Ukrainian armed forces with the necessary equipment, Defense Minister Anita Anand said.
“Battle tanks go to the aid of Ukraine. The first Canadian Leopard 2 is on its way. Canada unwaveringly supports Ukraine,” – wrote Anand on Twitter, specifying that the plane took off from Halifax Airport.
Back in mid-January, the issue of transferring Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv, according to the Canadian authorities, not discussed. “We will consider all requests from Ukraine [относительно возможных новых поставок оружия]but for now we [не обсуждали вопрос] Leopard 2 tanks,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at the time.
At the end of January, the Canadian government reported that since February last year, Canada had allocated more than $1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. On February 3, Anand said that she had discussed with her Western colleagues the supply of military equipment to Ukraine, including Leopard 2 battle tanks.
On January 25, Germany and the United States announced the delivery of 14 Leopard 2 tanks and 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius specified that the first German military equipment would arrive in Ukraine in late March or early April. Poland, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands also announced plans to transfer tanks to Kyiv. In addition, Great Britain is going to send its Challenger 2 to Ukraine.
In January, the Kremlin said that the supply of tanks to Kyiv would not change the situation, but would “add problems” for Ukraine. Later, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed that the Leopard and Abrams tanks, which the West is going to transfer to Ukraine, will burn down in the same way as the rest of Western military equipment.
