Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the gradual increase in the size of the Russian army involves the training of more officers. In 2023, military educational institutions need to accept about 18 thousand “motivated and trained students and cadets.” It is known that in 2021 the Ministry of Defense planned to enroll more than 12.5 thousand cadets in universities.
Mr. Shoigu said at a conference call that military schools are training in 280 specialties. “As practice shows, the most popular among young people are such professions as a military pilot, navigator, paratrooper, sailor, scout, motorized rifleman, tanker. Interest has increased in engineering specialties related to the operation of the latest weapons and equipment,” the minister said. His speech was published in Telegram channel Ministry of Defense.
Since 2023, President Vladimir Putin has increased the size of the Russian armed forces by 137 thousand people, to 2.04 million (1.15 million military personnel). The Ministry of Defense reported that new military formations would be equipped with them. Sergei Shoigu in the fall of 2022 explained the decision by the actions of Western countries.
