The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy has decided to revoke the protection status of two more Soviet monuments located in Kyiv. A message about this was published by the press service of the Ministry of Culture on May 17.
The report notes that two monuments of monumental art – a monument to the participants of the January armed uprising of 1918 in Mariinsky Park and an obelisk in honor of the hero city of Kiev on Halytska Square – were recognized as not subject to inclusion in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine.
This decision fits in with the general trend of abandoning symbols associated with the Soviet Union and Russia, which became especially active after the outbreak of hostilities. The Ukrainian authorities have begun mass renaming of streets and dismantling of monuments.
In June 2022, a new body called the Council for De-Russification, Decommunization and Decolonization was created to coordinate the renaming of toponyms and the dismantling of Soviet monuments.
