The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation announced that they intend to correlate the theatrical repertoire with a single school curriculum in literature, which will be launched in all Russian schools from September 1, 2023. This measure is planned to be introduced throughout the country. In those areas where there are no theaters, students will be shown recordings of performances.
“From September 1, 2023, a unified literature program will be launched in all schools. It would be nice to return to the Soviet tradition, when schoolchildren watched performances based on the classics they had learned in the theater. This will motivate both to study works and to visit theaters,” the press service of the Ministry of Culture told Interfax following the meeting between the head of the department, Olga Lyubimova, and the Minister of Education, Sergei Kravtsov.
The ministers also discussed the work of school theaters. During 2023, it is planned to open a theater in every school. Today, there are 28,000 school theaters in Russia. Olga Lyubimova and Sergey Kravtsov also agreed to show contemporary Russian films in schools.
January 25 Sergey Kravtsov informedthat from September 1, 2023, the compulsory school literature curriculum will include the novels “How the Steel Was Tempered” by Nikolai Ostrovsky and “The Young Guard” by Alexander Fadeev. The program also included works about the Great Patriotic War, including “Hot Snow” by Yuri Bondarev.
On September 14, the State Duma adopted in the third reading the law “On Education”, which establishes uniform educational programs in all Russian schools. The law provides for universal programs for the humanities – the Russian language, literature, history, social science, geography. One of the authors of the bill, Olga Kazakova, explained that in this way students are “prepared for our values.”
