Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Tallinn and All Estonia Evgeniy (Reshetnikov) announced his decision to leave the country due to the authorities’ refusal to extend his residence permit.
Previously, such a decision was made by the Police and Border Guard Department of the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs, which believes that the Metropolitan poses a potential threat to the security of the state, in particular, for his unspoken condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
According to official information, the Metropolitan’s temporary residence permit expires on February 6, after which he will need to leave the country. For his part, Metropolitan Eugene qualified the authorities’ decision as “politically motivated” and sent his objections to the police department, but has not yet received a response.
In his last service in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral of Tallinn, the Metropolitan expressed confidence that his departure from the country was “God’s providence.” He also emphasized the lack of persecution at this time and called on parishioners to pray for him.
