In the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra (KhMAO), secular and spiritual authorities are in conflict. The reason was the shooting in the region of a film under the working title “Succubus”, which tells about the interaction of young people with an ancient demon during a training retreat to strengthen relationships. Metropolitan of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut Pavel accused the KhMAO government of corrupting youth and inefficient use of budgetary funds. The administration of the district stated that the filming is not funded from the budget, and the district television company provides equipment for rent.

The conflict between Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut and officials of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug government began after the authorities supported the filming of the film directed by Serik Beiseu under the working title “Succubus” on the territory of the district. Serik Beiseu is an editor, screenwriter and director originally from Kazakhstan. He directed the films “A Pill from Tears” and “Russian Races” (both in 2014), participated in the editing of the films “The Little Humpbacked Horse” (2021), “Chuk and Gek. Big Adventure ”(2022) and others.

The filming process of the film company Logistic Star Production and Icemedia (a division of the film production company KD Studios) began in Ugra in October 2022.

The film is about how several young couples go to a private island to participate in a training retreat to strengthen relationships.

“During the retreat, the heroes encounter an ancient succubus demon that feeds on the life energy of people, taking on someone else’s appearance and provoking victims to show the worst qualities and do terrible things,” Icemedia said. “The fight against evil will not only be for young heroes a struggle for survival, but also a test of their moral values and beliefs.”

The filmmakers clarified that the film is based on “domestic and world cultural and moral traditions”, the origins of which originate in the Christian religion.

“The key position of this tradition is contained primarily in the New Testament: “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” (Gospel of John, 1:5),” Icemedia explained.

Succubus, according to the medieval mythology of European peoples, is a demon of lust and depravity, which visits young men at night and causes voluptuous dreams in them. According to the view of Christian demonologists, a succubus is a devil in a female form. However, according to Kommersant’s information, the picture will be released under the name “Reflection”.

Metropolitan Pavel of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, speaking at the coordinating council for the spiritual and moral education of students in the Surgut region, accused the director of the department of public, external relations and youth policy of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug Elena Shumakova, who, according to him, is the curator of the project, of corrupting youth. “A large number of students from Surgut State University are taking part in the project,” Metropolitan Pavel specified. “Ms. Shumakova does not hesitate to say that they will get a good experience. Only here is the experience from the demon – it is demonic, satanic. This is how we educate our youth today.” He reproached the government of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug Governor Natalia Komarova for inefficient use of budgetary funds: “In the current difficult time, one might say wartime, there is money for all these demonic films, but there is no money for textbooks and workbooks on the basics of Orthodox culture and socio-cultural sources. As they say, everything is for the front, everything is for victory. I think the youth in our district is in danger and we need to sound the alarm.”

Elena Shumakova, in a conversation with Kommersant, denied the information that the film was being shot at the expense of the regional budget. “This is a private project implemented on the territory of Yugra and the Moscow region. I am not its curator,” the official assured. That’s all”. According to her, Icemedia plans to shoot five full-length films in Ugra in the coming years. “The total amount of private investment in filming will be more than 900 million rubles,” said Elena Shumakova.

Governor Natalya Komarova did not attend the liturgy that the Metropolitan of Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut served at the Resurrection Cathedral in Khanty-Mansiysk on the night of January 7. However, Elena Shumakova does not associate this with the scandal surrounding the filming. “The contrived story of anonymous Telegram channels. On the eve of Christmas, the governor visited the temple in Pokachi, which she wrote about in her social networks,” said Ms. Shumakova. It should be noted that on December 9, at the suggestion of Mrs. Komarova, Metropolitan Pavel received the title of “Honorary Citizen of Yugra”.
