On July 31, ECOWAS, which includes 15 states of the African region, issued a statement on the possible use of force if the rebels do not restore constitutional order in the country within a week and release the ousted president. On August 6, the bloc’s ultimatum expired. On the evening of the same day, the military leadership of Niger closed the country’s airspace due to the threat of a military invasion. According to the representative of the junta Amadou Abraman, two neighboring states are pulling their troops to the borders of Niger to prepare for intervention.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the military coup in Niger, calling it “illegal and very dangerous.” Paris did not recognize the power of the rebels and demanded the release of the arrested President Mohamed Bazum. At the beginning of August, Paris evacuated its citizens from Niger, while France refused to withdraw its military from the country. Later Niger accused France in preparation for military intervention. On August 9, the rebels said that France had violated the airspace of the republic. In Paris these accusations rejected. August 25 rebels obliged Ambassador to Niger Sylvain Itte to leave the republic within 48 hours. In turn, Macron said that the ambassador would remain in Niger.
