The reason for this may be Musk’s reluctance to comply with the requirements of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force at the end of August 2023. The purpose of this document was called the fight against disinformation and the protection of children. The new law strengthened control over 19 platforms, including X (Twitter), TikTok, YouTube, etc. In case of violation of the law, the service, the number of active users of which exceeds 45 million people, may face a fine of 6% of global turnover.
10 October European Commissioner for Internal Trade and Services Thierry Breton sent A letter to Musk accusing the social network of spreading “illegal content and misinformation.” In the same letter, he demanded that Musk respond to the remarks within 24 hours and contact law enforcement agencies.
After this, Musk said that the EU had not provided any evidence confirming the spread of disinformation on the topic of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
