G20 delegates have developed compromise formulations in the G20 communiqué on the situation in Ukraine, Bloomberg and Reuters report, citing sources.

G20 representatives have reached a compromise on the language in the final communique, which will be presented to the bloc’s leaders, the sources said. The current draft document, as the agency notes, emphasizes “the principles of the UN Charter against the use of force and in favor of territorial integrity” and also welcomes efforts to achieve a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.

Reuters writesthat there are no details of the content of the communiqué, but it may be similar to the wording of the document published in Indonesia at the 2022 summit.

Russia at the summit is Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. On September 1, he said that the declaration would be approved by Moscow only if it reflected its position. According to a high-ranking Reuters source in one of the G20 countries, the paragraph on Ukraine was agreed upon by Western countries and sent to Russia for review.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on the publications of Western media.

“Everyone who understands anything about working on such documents understands that only the officially published text is agreed upon. Before that, anything can happen. You can comment on the progress of the negotiations. But not a single Sherpa will undertake to declare or assert that this or that part is not subject to any revision,” wrote she is on her Telegram channel.

The G20 meeting is taking place in New Delhi on September 9-10. On September 8, a message from the ministry regarding Lavrov’s upcoming participation in the summit in New Delhi was published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry. It said that the G7 countries are putting pressure on India, wanting to reflect unilateral approaches on the situation around Ukraine in the final documents of the G20 summit. Despite this, the Foreign Ministry noted, India is trying to adhere to neutrality. In particular, New Delhi did not agree to invite Ukraine to the summit at the request of the West, the Russian department recalled.

Earlier, Vedomosti wrote that the G20 countries may not agree on the final joint document due to a number of contradictions between them, including on issues of global politics and climate.
