The first American Abrams tanks were delivered to Ukraine, writes The New York Times, citing two anonymous Pentagon sources.

The newspaper clarifies that the tanks were delivered to Ukraine several months ahead of schedule and could be used in Kyiv’s counteroffensive. NYT’s interlocutors did not specify how many tanks were delivered.

September 19, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin statedthat the United States will soon supply the first tanks to Ukraine. From the first delivery, the Ukrainian Armed Forces may receive more than 10 American tanks, he specified. In total, the United States plans to send 31 Abrams combat units to Ukraine.

During his visit to New York from September 18 to 22, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky held talks with US President Joe Biden, who promisedthat the first Abrams tanks will be delivered at the end of September.

Reuters previously reported that the Biden administration is looking to create a framework for depleted uranium Abrams tanks that would be highly effective on modern tanks and armored vehicles. Ammunition can turn on another relief package totaling between $240 million and $375 million.
