Japan refused to cooperate with the United States in the development of a new fighter for its Air Self-Defense Forces, writes Shukan Gendai.
As noted in the publication, this decision was extremely unusual, since fighters for Japan, as a rule, are either completely produced in the United States or are developed in close cooperation with them. Japan will work together with Great Britain and Italy on the new fighter.
According to the publication, Tokyo refused to cooperate with Washington because of the position of the American company Lockheed Martin, which did not want to share the technologies requested by the Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The American side provided data on the F-35 fighters, which Tokyo already buys from the United States. The Pentagon, the newspaper notes, supported the position of Lockheed Martin.
At the same time, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin welcomed the cooperation between Tokyo and London, promising to explore the possibility of Japanese-American cooperation in the development of drones that will be shared with next-generation fighters.
Currently, the world is in serial production of three fifth-generation fighters developed in the 21st century – the American F-35, the Russian Su-57 and the Chinese J-20. Turkey, India and Japan have announced plans to develop their modern fighter. At the end of October United Aircraft Corporation informed about the first flight of the upgraded Su-57.
Earlier in July, the US Air Force successfully experienced hypersonic missile developed by Lockheed Martin as part of the ARRW (Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon) program, Reuters reported.
