The German government approved Poland’s application for the transfer of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine, figured out Der Spiegel.
As the newspaper notes, in 2002, Germany sold Poland 23 of these fighters from the stocks of the former GDR. The Polish Air Force currently has about 12 MiG-29s in service.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced plans to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. He stressed that the equipment is in full working order. At the same time, Warsaw does not intend to transfer F-16 fighters to Kyiv, Duda said. According to Spiegel, Poland has already handed over eight MiG-29s to Ukraine.
At the end of March Slovakia reported about sending to Ukraine the first four of the 13 promised MiG-29 fighters. The Kremlin, commenting on the deliveries, said that in this way Western countries “are engaged in the disposal of old unnecessary equipment.” Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed that the supply of aircraft to Ukraine will not affect the course of the special operation, and all military equipment will be destroyed.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
