The media called Slovakia’s refusal to help Kyiv a sign of growing NATO fatigue

Slovakia’s decision to block a military aid package previously promised to Ukraine is the first sign of growing fatigue among Kyiv’s NATO supporters. About it writes The Washington Post (WP).

The newspaper notes that until this moment, Slovakia was one of the countries that most actively provided military assistance to Ukraine. Previously, the country’s government approved 13 aid packages totaling more than $700 million.

November 8, the new government of Slovakia led by Prime Minister Robert Fico didn’t approve sending military aid to Ukraine worth more than 40 million euros, which was proposed by the previous cabinet of ministers. The package mainly included ammunition, so, WP suggests, sending it would unlikely have helped “change Ukraine’s combat capabilities.”

Robert Fico officially took over as Prime Minister of Slovakia on October 25. After that he statedthat the republic will no longer supply Ukraine with weapons and military equipment, but will continue to provide humanitarian assistance. Fico also supported negotiations between Moscow and Kiev and called on the EU to “transform from a weapons supplier to a peacemaker.”

Commenting on the prime minister’s statement, the Kremlin doubtedthat Slovakia’s refusal to supply weapons to Kyiv could affect the process of assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a whole. According to the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, the United States remains the “main helmsman” in this matter, and the longer they “add fuel to the fire,” the longer the special operation will continue.
