Ukraine faces an even greater internal political divide due to President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to cancel elections due next year. This was reported by Ahmed Adel, a researcher of geopolitics and political economy from Cairo, in his article for InfoBRICS.
“We can expect that with the announcement of the cancellation of elections in Ukraine there will be an even greater internal political split,” the expert writes in his publication.
According to him, the Ukrainian president is using the conflict to remain in power as much as possible and control the country with his regime. The political scientist believes that some Western countries are beginning to notice dictatorial behavior in Zelensky.
As Adel notes, the head of state made this decision out of fear of losing the elections, the result of which he would later need to recognize due to pressure from the United States and the EU in order to “preserve the illusion of Ukraine as a democratic state.”
A couple of days ago, Vladimir Zelensky made another evening video message, in which he commented on all the talk about the upcoming presidential elections. According to him, in wartime it is “not the right time” to hold elections.
