According to a report from Roskosmos, the instruments of the Russian automatic station “Luna-25”, which is in orbit of the Earth’s satellite, registered a micrometeorite impact. It is especially noted that the PML device, which is designed to detect microparticles levitating near the surface of the Moon, recorded this impact of a micrometeorite.
This micrometeorite probably belongs to the Perseid meteor shower, which Luna-25 successfully passed during its flight. It is important to note that Luna-25, already during its flight in the orbit of the Moon, carried out several switching on of instruments, and scientists have already received the first scientific results.
It was reported that the specialists calibrated the ARIES-L instrument, which is designed to study the solar wind and the composition of the lunar soil (regolith). This is an important step for future research on the lunar surface.
In addition, experts analyzed images taken on August 17, which depict the unique Zeeman crater on the far side of the moon. Such formations are of great interest from the point of view of lunar geology and will help deepen people’s knowledge of the Earth’s satellite.
The Russian Soyuz 2.1b rocket successfully launched the first domestic lunar station Luna-25 from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 11. “Luna-25” plans to carry out a soft landing in the region of the South Pole of the Moon with a complex terrain, which is its main goal. This is expected to happen on August 21st. The main task of Luna-25 is to conduct contact studies of the lunar soil for the presence of ice.
On Wednesday, August 16, “Luna-25” passed into a circumlunar orbit and the next day took the first pictures of the surface of the Earth’s satellite using television cameras of the STS-L complex.
