The last Greek king Constantine II, who was on the throne from 1964 to 1974, has died at the age of 82, according to Proto Tema newspaper.
A week ago he was hospitalized with a stroke. He was admitted to the Athens hospital in critical condition. For the past two years, the health of the former monarch was poor – he suffered a coronavirus with pneumonia, another stroke and moved in a wheelchair.
Constantine II was 82 years old. He was on the throne in 1964-1974, although he formally lost power in 1967 after the establishment of the dictatorship of the junta of colonels. In a referendum in 1974, the people of Greece voted against the monarchy. He was from the Glücksburg dynasty, the son of King Paul I and his wife Queen Frederica of Hanover. As a descendant of the Danish king Christian IX, he bore the title of Prince of Denmark.
