An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the Kuril Islands, follows from data on site local branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The earthquake was registered at 17:14 local time (9:14 Moscow time). Its source was located at a depth of 63 km, 60 km south of the village of Malokurilskoye on Shikotan Island.
Tremors were registered in Malokurilsky, said the head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, Elena Semenova “RIA News”.
This is the second earthquake in a day near the Kuril Islands. The first of them with a magnitude of 5.0 was registered at 06:29 local time (22:29 Moscow time on March 1).
This week, Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbits, best known for predicting an earthquake in Turkey, declaredthat a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7 to 8 will occur in the area of Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands in early March. At the same time, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences says that at present seismologists do not record reliable earthquake precursors in Kamchatka.
