The Kremlin will ask the Foreign Ministry about the fate of a Russian woman who became a hostage in Iraq – Kommersant

Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on the information about the Russian hostage in Iraq. According to him, the Kremlin does not know anything about this, but they “will certainly take an interest” in the Foreign Ministry.

“Measures to protect interests are usually taken through our diplomatic departments,” this is how Mr. Peskov answered a journalist’s question about whether the Kremlin knows about the kidnapping of the girl and whether any actions are being taken to free her.

Yesterday, July 5, in the evening, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedthat a citizen of Russia and Israel, Elizaveta Tsurkova, was kidnapped by Shiite militias in Iraq a few months ago. According to the Israeli government, the girl is being held hostage by the Iraqi Shiite group Kataib Hezbollah.

According to Israeli media, Elizaveta Tsurkova went missing in March. Her last message on Twitter is dated March 21. She visited Iraq on a Russian passport and came to the country as a research scientist for the US Princeton University. She is an expert on Syria, the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) and the Middle East.
