The Kremlin does not consider Nadezhdin as Putin’s rival – Kommersant

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin did not approve the presidential nomination of Boris Nadezhdin and does not consider him as a rival to the current head of state Vladimir Putin. He declined to comment when asked whether the Central Election Commission (CEC) would deny him registration due to support from the opposition.

“Not at all. We do not consider him as a rival,” the spokesman responded to CNN’s question whether the Kremlin considers Boris Nadezhidn’s registration a threat.

To a clarifying question whether the Central Electoral Commission would refuse to register a candidate, Dmitry Peskov replied: “The Central Electoral Commission has powers – you need to contact them for clarification. Any citizen of Russia has the constitutional right to run for the position of president; this does not need to be agreed upon. There is a certain algorithm of actions (nominations.— “Ъ”) that needs to be completed,” said Dmitry Peskov during a press call.

The day before, the headquarters of Boris Nadezhdin, who was nominated as a presidential candidate by the extra-parliamentary party “Civil Initiative”, reported about collecting more than 100 thousand signatures. However, the collection continues, since they are “not ideal” for submission to the CEC.

Submission of signature sheets to the CEC ends on January 31, 2024. Candidates from extra-parliamentary parties need to collect 100 thousand signatures, self-nominated candidates – 300 thousand. The CEC must make a decision on registering candidates by February 10.

As of today, representatives of three parliamentary parties have been registered as presidential candidates: Leonid Slutsky (LDPR), Vladislav Davankov (“New People”) and Nikolai Kharitonov (CPRF). Vladimir Putin’s election headquarters on January 22 passed signatures in the CEC in his support. The presidential elections will take place from March 15 to 17.
