The Kremlin did not comment on the news about the alleged placement of a permanent base for the Russian Navy in Abkhazia and the transfer of most of the Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk. This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.

“I can’t comment on this in any way. Naturally, issues related to the deployment of our units, our ships, our units are issues within the competence of the Ministry of Defense,” he said.

On October 4, The Wall Street Journal reported that most of the Russian ships of the Black Sea Fleet allegedly left Sevastopol and relocated to Novorossiysk.

Earlier, President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania, in an interview with Izvestia, said that on the Black Sea coast in Abkhazia there will be posted a new permanent base for the Russian Navy. Later, the head of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, Viktor Bondarev reportedthat this will improve the defense capabilities of the two countries.
