The Kremlin has no reaction to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“No, we don’t have any reaction to this,” he clarified when asked.

Earlier on October 6, the Nobel Committee announced that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Mohammadi “for her struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.” The committee noted that the human rights activist was previously sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. She is currently still in prison.

Mohammadi has been involved in human rights work since the 1990s. After graduating from university, she worked as an engineer, as well as a columnist in various newspapers supporting ideas about reforms, the committee clarified. In 2003, she began collaborating with the human rights center “Human Rights Defenders” in Tehran, and is now its vice president.

In 2011, Mohammadi was first arrested and sentenced to prison for her efforts to help jailed activists and their families, the committee said in a statement. She was released two years later and joined the campaign against the death penalty in Iran. It is noted that Mohammadi expressed support for demonstrators during the protests in the fall of 2022, the reason for which was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.
