The Kremlin demanded the extradition of an SS man who spoke in the Canadian Parliament

Canadian authorities are obliged to extradite and bring to justice the 98-year-old Ukrainian veteran of the SS Galicia division, Yaroslav Hunka (Hunko). This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov during a regular briefing.

“Here there can be no statute of limitations for such crimes, this is obvious. Therefore, of course, we believe that the Canadian authorities have an obligation to bring this criminal to justice and to hand over to those who are going to bring him to justice. There will hardly even be any room for a trial here. It’s clear that we are talking about a Nazi.”

Speaking about the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Anthony Rota, Peskov wondered about the responsibility of the Canadian parliament itself, which applauded the former SS man.

“Of course, here reason dictates the need for some kind of denunciation of Nazism. Parliament must do this, otherwise it is a parliament that is tainted by these applause. <…> “I have already said that there is no international reaction that we would prefer to hear rather than observe silence on this matter.”

The presidential press secretary recalled that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky also welcomed Hunka.

“The Kyiv regime’s addiction to the Nazi ideology is not new. This is something we have been talking about for a long time. The fact that Zelensky also stood and applauded the fascist once again confirms this. And of course, one can only sympathize with the memory of Ukrainian veterans who fought against fascism, including Zelensky’s grandfather.”

On September 22, Rota invited Hunka to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He was introduced as a war hero and received applause. Rota later apologized “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” Russian Embassy in Ottawa reacted a note of protest to the Canadian Foreign Ministry.

Peskov named “sloppy” is the attitude towards the memory of the Second World War in Canada. Minister of Education and Science of Poland Przemyslaw Czarnek offered consider the possibility of extraditing Hunka. The Office of the UN Secretary General also spoke against honoring the SS veteran. Deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation were indignant Hunka’s invitation to parliament.

On September 26 it became known that Rota will leave from his post as Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada. Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova named Rota was the “scapegoat” who got Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his associates out of harm’s way.
