The Kremlin views the possible appearance of a Polish tank battalion on the border with Belarus as a step towards escalating the situation. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
“Of course, this is another step towards escalating tension, nothing else. But in this case, our Belarusian friends know what to do. They are doing everything necessary in this situation to ensure safety,” Peskov said.
The formation of a new tank battalion on the eastern border of Poland was announced on November 12 by the country’s Minister of National Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak. According to him, in the event of an attack from the eastern side, the division is called upon to provide security.
The new tank battalion is part of the 1st Infantry Division of the Legions. About her creation Blaszczak said in January. It was planned that the division would include four brigades of four battalions each. Korean K2 tanks and American Abrams tanks were chosen for equipment.
On October 10, 2022, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Ukraine is working to open a second front on the border with the republic. Because of this, Russia and Belarus agreed to create joint combat training centers for the military of the two countries.
